A Mason's Work

Workman's Rule 5 from Brian Mattocks's book A Mason's Work is blunt: you will work the same stone until you get it right. That isn't a metaphor for punishment. It's a description of how unresolved patterns operate in a life. The concept maps closely to what many traditions call karma — not cosmic retribution, but the predictable recurrence of lessons we haven't fully absorbed. The stone doesn't change. We do, or we don't.

Brian walks through a concrete example that most people recognize once they hear it: the lesson that no one is going to do the hard thing for you. You learn it as a kid, you learn it again as a teenager, you learn it again when your career demands a decision. The distance between those recurrences is a direct function of how honestly you engaged with the lesson each time it appeared. There is almost certainly a version of that lesson you are avoiding right now.

The week ahead will focus on building the skills to recognize these recurring patterns earlier, understand what they look like in practice, and do something useful when you spot them. This episode sets the foundation.
